PATHOLOGIES
This page is meant to show various pathologies that can affect the equine hoof and/or distal limb. All photos on this page are either owned by me, or have been reproduced here with permission.
Akhal Teke Mare - Unknown age, severely foundered, and mismanaged with incorrect shoeing, and hooves terribly neglected.
The next set of photographs is of a Percheron gelding who was euthanized due to Canker. Canker is a horrible disease that eventually consumes the entire frog and soft tissue of the hoof, leaving the horse unable to walk, stand, or function. This gelding was rescued from an auction by The Equihab Foundation. Every attempt to rehabilitate him was made, and eventually they made the decision to euthanize him for his own best interest. I had radiographs done of this cadaver leg, and no discernable bone was visible inside the foot due to the canker invading the capsule so heavily. I encourage you to contact the founder of Equihab for more information on Canker, if your horse has been diagnosed.
The following photos are not as dramatic, but show a case of underrun heels and long toe. This is a young Thoroughbred mare who is very sound, and healthy, but tends to grow long toe/low heel (LTLH) feet if not trimmed on a short cycle.
The photos below are of a horse afflicted with DSLD (Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis). The horse is being treated by Jason Maki, RJF, CJF, who manages this horse's condition with a rundown shoe.
